FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE CONSECRATION OF A BISHOP

Edited by Fr Lawrence Ogundipe SDV  Ordination is the sacramental ceremony in which a man becomes a deacon, priest, or bishop and is enabled to minister in Christ's name and that of the Church. There are three Levels of the Sacrament of Holy Orders: diaconate; priesthood; and episcopal, and the rites of ordination differs according to the three levels although some elements remain the same, what then happens during the ordination of a Bishop?  WHO IS A BISHOP?  Bishop is the title of an ecclesiastical dignitary who possesses the fullness of the priesthood to rule a diocese as its chief pastor, in due submission to the primacy of the pope. The bishop, who has the fullest of orders, has a three-fold ministry of prophet, priest and shepherd.  RITE OF CONSECRATION OF A BISHOP  It is important to first of all note that, the Code of Canon Law states that:  "The minister of sacred ordination is a consecrated bishop" (Can. 1012). It therefore follows that a Bishop i...

HOW OLD IS MARY TODAY ?

This question was raised during the celebration of the Nativity of mother Mary in 2021 at mass. Let's go into history to unravel how old she would had celebrated if she was physically with us today 8th September 2024.  Some apocryphal accounts state that at the time of her betrothal to Joseph, Mary was 12–14 years old. According to ancient Jewish custom, Mary could have been betrothed at about 12. Hyppolitus of Thebes says that Mary lived for 11 years after the death of her son Jesus, dying in 41 AD. Some ancient authors said that she gave birth to Jesus at 16. Now let's calculate  Jesus lived 30 years with Mary and worked for 3 years with his apostles meaning he died at 33. Hence 16 +33 + 2024 = 2073 So we arrived at her age with historical information from the Sacred tradition that could only be found in the Catholic Church  Am proud to be a Catholic  Happy 2073th  birthday to mother Mary Fr law SDV

THE THEOLOGY OF SAINT MONICA

One of the greatest conversion stories in Christian history is that of St. Augustine, fifth-century African Bishop of Hippo in present-day Algeria. We find this story detailed in the most famous spiritual autobiography ever written—his Confessions. However, at the center of this story is St. Monica, the wandering sinner's prayerful mother. Augustine is the son of her many tears, which as Ambrose the holy bishop of Milan assured her, can never perish! Thankfully, she lived to see her son become a Catholic Christian before she died and thus went to her grave with tearful joy and holy contentment.  However, it is a mistake to reduce Monica's image to merely that of a prayer warrior—a woman of many prayerful tears. According to this popular portrait, Monica is presented as the patron of mothers with difficult children, usually with the hope that women would be encouraged by her story to pray fervently for their wayward children and never give up on them. Of course, being simply ...

A Priest basically has three duties: Sanctification, Teaching & Governing the people of God. Very Rev Fr. Mark Omene CDA

A HOMILY DELIVERED BY REV. FR. MARK OMENE AT THE THANKSGIVING MASS OF REV. FR. GABRIEL SEKUNDA AT ST BRENDAN PARISH JULY 11, 2021. When we were studying Sacred Theology at St Augustine Major Seminary Jos, Late Bishop G. G. Ganaka used to tell us that a Priest is called to be a Saint, A Scholar and A Gentleman. Saint Augustine did warn us that grace is built on nature.  A Priest is called an Altar Christus meaning another Christ. As you have finish your seminary training and now ordained a Priest, do not say that I have arrived, prepare for Theology Five; because you have simply begun another journey. Respect the Church Hierarchy by obeying the Pope, your Bishop, your Parish Priest and all Ecclesiastical authorities. Respect and set boundaries especially with regards to the three W’s namely: Wine, Women and Wealth. Do not be a Priest who is chasing after wine, women and wealth, for it could destroy you. Visit and honour your parents but remember you are not the bread winner o...

MARY, MOTHER OF THE CHURCH BY Fr Bernard Awasume Akum, SDV.

ORIGIN OF THE FEAST Today is the Memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church. In Roman Catholic Mariology, Mother of the Church (Latin: Mater Ecclesiae) is a title officially given to Mary by Pope Paul VI. The title was first used in the 4th century by Saint Ambrose of Milan, as rediscovered by the great theologian Hugo Rahner. The title was also used by Pope Benedict XIV in 1748 and then by Pope Leo XIII in 1885. Pope John Paul II placed it in the Catechism of the Catholic Church; while Pope Francis added a feast by this title into the Roman calendar. In 2018, Pope Francis decreed that the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church be inserted into the Roman calendar on the Monday after Pentecost (also known as Whit Monday) and to be celebrated every year. The decree was signed on February 11, 2018, the Memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes, at the 160th anniversary of the Lourdes apparitions. It was issued on March 3, 2018.  THE ROLE OF OUR BLESSED MOTHER IN THE CHURCH  ...

Marriage Impediments by Fr Lawrence Ogundipe SDV

INTRODUCTION Tertullian’s treatise on marriage [1] may not be classified among his major writings, but they help us to understand the gradual deterioration of the thought from Catholic orthodox to the harsh extremes of fanatical Montanism, over the years theologians have used his treatise on marriage to support their argument on the importance and sacramental nature of Christian marriage. “ Ad uxorem ” [2] Discussed how, and why to re-marry is wrong, he points out the problem of remarriage outside the faith in clear terms. It appeared that Tertullian married a Christian girl. He wrote this treatise on marriage in his church mind, perhaps according to what was in vogue; the Gnostics position against every form of marriage, for them it is sinful to get married. This position is not held on to by Christianity as such, Tertullian rebuts them by writing two letters to his wife where he elaborates ‘Marriage’ and ‘Re-Marriage.’ According to him if his wife must re-marry, she must ma...
